Hiring a car in Baku makes far more sense for everything beyond the city than for the centre itself. Central Baku is comfortably explored on foot, by metro or with Bolt: the Old City, Maiden Tower, Flame Towers and the Caspian promenade all sit within the same part of town. A car starts earning its keep once you leave the capital — Gobustan, Yanar Dag, Quba, Gabala, Sheki and Shahdag are where it becomes genuinely useful.

Car hire prices in Baku sit noticeably above the Caucasus average. Expect around $111–126 per day — roughly 30–50% higher than Tbilisi or Yerevan. That’s less about inflated pricing and more about local market reality: demand is stronger and the fleets are generally newer. Economy cars start around $30–45, crossovers from $70–120, while premium 4×4 models begin at about $130 a day.

Most travellers hire a car for two to four days — usually for Gobustan, Quba, Gabala or Sheki. Around Baku itself, walking, the metro and Bolt tend to be quicker and easier.

Picking up the car at GYD and in the city

Rental desks at Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD) are located on the first floor of Terminal 1, while the cars themselves are parked directly outside the terminal building. International chains operate 24/7, though with TakeCars partners the process is usually simpler and quicker: a representative meets you by flight number at arrivals, hands over the keys and skips the usual queue at the desk. From baggage collection to driving away normally takes around 15–20 minutes.

The partner meets clients directly at arrivals using the flight number. The contract and vehicle inspection are handled in the car park itself — usually around twenty minutes from baggage claim to departure.

GYD sits roughly 20 km north-east of central Baku along Baku Airport Highway. If you’re collecting the car later in the city instead, the Aeroexpress bus runs from the «28 May» metro station every 20 minutes for 2 manat, while TX4 taxis from the official rank outside the terminal cost around 25 manat into the centre.

Gabala and Ganja

One of the things that makes TakeCars unusual in Azerbaijan is the ability to collect a car not only in Baku, but also in Gabala (including GBB airport) and Ganja (including KVD airport). International rental chains rarely offer this. It makes one-way itineraries across the country far more practical, especially when flying into Baku and departing from Ganja.

Where to drive from Baku

The main reason people hire a car in Baku is for short trips beyond the capital. Gobustan, famous for its prehistoric rock carvings and mud volcanoes, sits just 65 km south along the M3 — an ordinary saloon handles the route comfortably. Yanar Dag and the Ateshgah fire temple combine naturally into a half-day Absheron Peninsula drive. The Caspian beaches around Sea Breeze and Dalga are around an hour away.

A classic day out from Baku combines Gobustan, Yanar Dag and Ateshgah in a single trip. Roughly one hundred kilometres each way, perfectly manageable in a standard saloon.

Longer routes are a different story. Quba lies 168 km north on the M1, Gabala around 215 km via Shamakhi on the M4, while Sheki is roughly 363 km away. Public transport makes these journeys awkward in a single day, which is why many travellers hire a car for two days and overnight in Gabala on the return leg.

Khinaliq — proper 4×4 territory

The road as far as Quba is fully paved. Beyond that, the final 60 km towards Khinaliq turns into a steep mountain track with rough surfaces and sharp climbs. This is not a route for an ordinary saloon.

A proper 4×4 is essential — typically a Mitsubishi Pajero, Toyota Land Cruiser Prado or similar SUV.

Khinaliq sits at around 2,200 metres above sea level and is considered one of the oldest continuously inhabited villages in the Caucasus. Without a proper 4×4, most cars turn back long before reaching it.

Closed land borders: where you cannot drive

This is one of the key Azerbaijan-specific details worth knowing in advance. The country’s land borders have remained closed to passenger traffic since March 2020. Initially introduced during COVID, the restrictions have been repeatedly extended. As of spring 2026, closures remain in place until at least 1 July 2026, with no confirmed reopening date announced. Freight traffic crosses normally; passengers do not.

If you’re planning a Georgia and Azerbaijan itinerary, think of it as two separate hires. A rental car from Baku cannot legally continue into Tbilisi — even with written permission from the rental company.

The Armenian border has been closed for more than thirty years following the Karabakh conflict. Iran and Russia are generally excluded by rental agreements and insurance policies as well.

For multi-country routes involving Georgia, most travellers simply take a short flight with Wizz Air or Buta Airways — around one hour and typically $60–120 each way — then collect a second rental car on arrival.

One of the most common mistakes is booking a Baku rental expecting to continue into Georgia by road. People regularly lose time and money at the border. Two flights and two separate rentals are usually the cleaner solution.

De prijs van autoverhuur in Bakoe hangt af van het seizoen en de lengte van de huurperiode.

Payment, deposit and insurance in Baku

One of the strongest advantages of hiring through TakeCars partners in Baku is payment flexibility. The online prepayment — usually around 15–20% — works with most Visa, Mastercard and Maestro cards. The remaining balance and security deposit are typically paid in cash when collecting the vehicle, whether in manat, dollars or euros.

For many travellers, this is considerably easier than dealing with a large credit-card hold.

Local partner deposits are usually between $200 and $500 and are returned immediately in cash when the car is handed back. International chains often freeze $500–1,500 on a credit card for anywhere between a week and a month.

Standard CDW is included with most rentals. For mountain routes such as Khinaliq, Quba or Shahdag, full cover at around $10–15 per day is usually worthwhile — rough mountain roads are unforgiving on tyres, rims and undersides.

It is important to understand that off-road damage is only covered if the vehicle was originally a proper 4×4. Taking a saloon onto mountain tracks or gravel roads usually voids the policy entirely.

If a saloon is damaged on rough gravel roads, repairs are normally deducted from the deposit in full. Off-road cover applies only to genuine 4×4 vehicles such as a Mitsubishi Pajero or Toyota Land Cruiser Prado.
