People fly in cheaply and conveniently, then head onward — to the Black Sea, to the Svaneti mountains, to the Imereti monasteries, or all the way east to Tbilisi. Without a car, the logistics turn into a chain of marshrutkas and taxis, and each link eats half a day.
There's little reason to rent a car for Kutaisi itself — it's small and walkable. But every trip out of Kutaisi — to a monastery, a canyon, the sea, or the mountains — without a car becomes a lottery of marshrutka schedules.
There are noticeably fewer suppliers in Kutaisi than in Tbilisi. The local fleet doesn't always meet demand, especially at Wizz Air peak and over New Year. Niet erg positieve indrukken. De auto was oud, met een kilometerstand van rond de 200000 km. De auto gaf meldingen over storingen van elektronische systemen - niet kritiek, maar onplezierig (het waarschuwingssysteem voor dode zones en abs was bijvoorbeeld uitgeschakeld). De banden waren all-season, blijkbaar viel er daarom een uit elkaar door de hitte. We waren 's avonds meer dan 100 km van Kutaisi verwijderd. De eigenaar van de auto aan de telefoon adviseerde ons om daar zelf een bandenreparatiebedrijf te zoeken. Het enige waar hij mee hielp was om vervolgens een soort van gesprek aan te knopen met de eigenaar van de bandenwinkel die we vonden. We hebben de wielen op eigen kosten vervangen en moesten extra betalen voor de spoed. We hadden geen vertrouwen meer in de auto en besloten hem een dag eerder terug te brengen. De eigenaar bood dan ook geen geld terug.

Wat kan ik zeggen - ik huurde een auto, de bevestiging kwam. In het contract dat ze stuurden, werden de gebieden waar met deze auto gereden kon worden sterk afgeraden (waaronder het gebied waar ik heen ging, maar ik belde terug - ze zeiden dat het mogelijk is als je voorzichtig bent). Bij aankomst ontmoetten ze me, brachten me naar de auto, en toen bleek dat voor de wegen waar ik heen ging, het niet erg geschikt was (wat niet zo'n fictie bleek te zijn). Wat is swingende auto - 2011, monteurs. Controle verbrand, de ophanging rammelde, wielen van verschillende patronen op de achteras. Ik reed er ongeveer 1400 km op - alles is prima. Ik gaf de auto zonder vragen, werd de borg onmiddellijk terug naar de staat van de auto, waren er geen klachten. Voor dit geld (in off. Rental duurder), zou ik zeggen ok, maar die. de staat van de auto is zeker alarmerend, hoewel ik denk dat het +/- hetzelfde is voor iedereen daar :) Ze beantwoordden altijd vragen, ontmoetten, namen de auto :)

Echt een plezier om in te rijden en bijna elke weg in Georgia te verkennen. Het ophalen van het voertuig verliep weer zonder problemen. 1. Pepople van Local Hires vertelde me dat ik met deze Suzuki prima tussen Mestia en Ushguli kon rijden. Dat was niet juist. Ik heb een betere 4x4 nodig voor deze weg. 2. De persoon die verantwoordelijk is voor het ophalen van een auto (Zaili)....He is onprofessioneel. We zouden elkaar 100 minuten voor mijn vertrektijd ontmoeten (op het vliegveld) om een auto op te halen (we hadden 1 dag van tevoren een afspraak gemaakt via WhatsApp). Ik belde hem op dat tijdstip. Hij zei dat hij er over 4 minuten zou zijn! Uiteindelijk arriveerde hij 40 minuten voor mijn geplande vertrektijd. Het was een beetje stressvol voor me omdat er een enorme rij was om te controleren. Toen hij aankwam, rekende hij ons 5 euro voor het wassen van een auto. 30 minuten eerder had ik de auto gewassen en ik betaalde slechts 1 euro. De auto was naar mijn mening schoongemaakt. Ik had geen tijd om ruzie te maken over 5 euro. Mijn klacht gaat niet over geld, het gaat over eerlijk zijn: wees op tijd - het wordt aanbevolen als we geplande vluchten hebben.
Which car works best in Kutaisi
For the city and short loops
If the plan is Kutaisi and surroundings (Gelati, Bagrati, Sataplia, Tskaltubo), any automatic saloon will do. Toyota Corolla, Ford Fusion, Hyundai Sonata — the typical pick in this segment. The climbs to the monasteries are short, and there are no serious mountain switchbacks nearby.

For Svaneti and longer drives

In Kutaisi we often hear: three-day rental, want to see Svaneti. The honest answer: in three days you can only realistically reach Mestia. Ushguli needs its own trip with an overnight and a confident 4x4.
Fuel and hybrids
The Kutaisi fleet includes many hybrids driven over from Tbilisi: Toyota Prius, Aqua, Lexus CT200h. They all require 95-octane petrol only — 92 throws a dashboard error and moves the car into limp mode. The major chains (SOCAR, Gulf, Wissol, Rompetrol) cover the city and the motorway to Batumi.
A common technical mistake in Kutaisi is filling a Prius with 92 at a late-night stop on the way from the airport. We always ask renters to watch the nozzle: the yellow label is 95, and the car will run fine.
