Autoverhuur beoordelingen in Koetaisi

Kutaisi is unusual in Georgia because the city itself isn't always the main destination. People fly in cheaply and conveniently, then head onward — to the Black Sea, to the Svaneti mountains, to the Imereti monasteries, or all the way east to Tbilisi. Without a car, the logistics turn into a chain of marshrutkas and taxis, and each link eats half a day.

There's little reason to rent a car for Kutaisi itself — it's small and walkable. But every trip out of Kutaisi — to a monastery, a canyon, the sea, or the mountains — without a car becomes a lottery of marshrutka schedules.

There are noticeably fewer suppliers in Kutaisi than in Tbilisi. The local fleet doesn't always meet demand, especially at Wizz Air peak and over New Year. That's why most cars offered in Kutaisi are actually pulled from the Tbilisi fleet, with delivery to David the Builder airport included free or at a modest fee. For the renter it's a net positive: the range is as wide as in the capital.

We tell clients plainly: a Kutaisi rental is usually the same vehicle as in Tbilisi, driven out to match your flight. The choice isn't reduced, and for rentals of a week or more the transfer is normally free of charge.

How pickup works at Kutaisi airport

David the Builder airport is compact: one terminal, one arrivals zone, the car park about 100 metres from the exit. Meetings run by flight number with automatic delay tracking, so there's no need to race against a timer on the day of departure.

International chains (Europcar, Hertz, Sixt) operate small desks in Kutaisi and typically serve standard traffic. Local suppliers and aggregators meet you with a name board immediately past the controlled zone. Contract and inspection take 10–15 minutes before you're on the road.

Kutaisi accepts Wizz night flights, sometimes at 3 or 4 in the morning. That's not a problem for meetings: the supplier arrives ahead of time, and the guest goes straight from passport control to a running car.

Cars are most often driven in from Tbilisi. The trip takes around six hours, so dispatch is scheduled against your arrival time in advance. On rentals of seven to ten days and longer, this delivery is typically included at no extra cost — a supplier would rather secure a week's booking than optimise a short local turn.

If you book same-day or the day before, agree the timing straight away: short-notice windows are tighter and urgent-delivery fees do exist. The ideal booking window is 5–10 days before your arrival, so the car can move at a relaxed pace.

We ask clients to share the actual landing time rather than the departure hour. That way the driver leaves Tbilisi with the right buffer and meets you as you walk out of arrivals, not 40 minutes after you've landed.

Volkswagen Tiguan in Georgië

Which car works best in Kutaisi

For the city and short loops

If the plan is Kutaisi and surroundings (Gelati, Bagrati, Sataplia, Tskaltubo), any automatic saloon will do. Toyota Corolla, Ford Fusion, Hyundai Sonata — the typical pick in this segment. The climbs to the monasteries are short, and there are no serious mountain switchbacks nearby.

Most of our Kutaisi clients are travellers who flew in for 3–5 days to explore Imereti and perhaps reach the sea. For that itinerary a saloon handles every road without compromise.

For Svaneti and longer drives

If Mestia, Ushguli, Racha or an overland run through the mountain villages to Batumi are on the itinerary, a crossover or 4x4 is the smarter call. Subaru Forester remains the universal workhorse: pricing, clearance, reliability. Ushguli specifically demands real four-wheel drive.

In Kutaisi we often hear: three-day rental, want to see Svaneti. The honest answer: in three days you can only realistically reach Mestia. Ushguli needs its own trip with an overnight and a confident 4x4.

Fuel and hybrids

The Kutaisi fleet includes many hybrids driven over from Tbilisi: Toyota Prius, Aqua, Lexus CT200h. They all require 95-octane petrol only — 92 throws a dashboard error and moves the car into limp mode. The major chains (SOCAR, Gulf, Wissol, Rompetrol) cover the city and the motorway to Batumi.

A common technical mistake in Kutaisi is filling a Prius with 92 at a late-night stop on the way from the airport. We always ask renters to watch the nozzle: the yellow label is 95, and the car will run fine.

Further afield — in the same car

From Kutaisi the itinerary extends in every direction. Car hire in Georgia is the country-level overview with seasons and border conditions. Car hire in Tbilisi suits travellers heading to the capital and then on to Kakheti or Kazbegi. Car hire in Batumi is for those finishing the trip on the Adjara coast.

What it costs to hire in Kutaisi

Kutaisi prices are essentially the same as Tbilisi — there is effectively one shared fleet. Economy from $17–22 per day, hybrids $22–28, crossovers from $29–35.

The one difference: far fewer cars are physically in Kutaisi at any time. During Wizz Air peak (July–August, New Year) choice tightens sharply. Book 3–6 weeks ahead.

In Kutaisi, peak season isn't so much about price increases — it's about cars running out. The best options go first: economy in a month, crossovers in two. A week before the flight the choice is minimal.

Deposits follow the rest of Georgia: often zero on economy, $100–300 on saloons, $300–500 on crossovers. Cash in US dollars or lari is accepted as standard.

For rentals of a week or more, the transfer from Tbilisi is usually included at no charge. On shorter bookings (2–3 days) a delivery fee may apply, but it's rarely more than a day's rental cost.

Sataplia nature reserve with its dinosaur footprints and the glass bridge over Okatse canyon — two sights on a single day trip. 10 km to Sataplia, 55 km to Okatse. Sealed road all the way; parking is free or 3 GEL in peak season.

A karst cave with an underground river 20 km from Kutaisi, and the abandoned Soviet sanatoriums of Tskaltubo 10 km away. Any saloon handles the route. Parking at the cave entrance. Tskaltubo is photogenic and worth a couple of hours between other stops.

Veelgestelde vragen

Where do I collect the hire car at Kutaisi airport?

A supplier representative waits with a name board just past passport control. The car is parked 100 metres away. The meeting runs by flight number, with delays tracked automatically. Contract and inspection take 10–15 minutes and you're on the road. The airport accepts flights 24/7, including night arrivals.

How much does car hire cost in Kutaisi per day?

Economy from $17–22 in low season, a hybrid like a Prius $22–28, a crossover from $29–35. In Wizz Air peak (July–August, New Year) prices climb 40–80%. The Kutaisi market is the same as Tbilisi: same fleet, similar rates, but fewer cars physically available locally.

Is it true that cars are driven in from Tbilisi?

Yes, it's normal practice: the Kutaisi local supply is modest and most of the fleet sits in the capital. Delivery takes around 6 hours, so book 5–10 days out. On rentals of 7–10 days or more, delivery is usually included free of charge — suppliers prefer securing the longer booking to charging the transfer fee.

Is a deposit required for car hire in Kutaisi?

Economy cars often come with no deposit — standard across Georgia. Saloons $100–300, crossovers $300–500, a 4x4 for Svaneti $500–800. Cash in US dollars or lari is taken as standard, and the deposit is refunded on the spot at drop-off if there are no fines or damage.

Can I collect a car from a night-time Wizz Air flight?

Yes — night arrivals at Kutaisi airport are normal and suppliers are used to them. A 3 or 4 a.m. meeting is standard, with no night surcharge from local operators or from us. The only requirement is an accurate arrival time at booking, so the driver leaves Tbilisi with the correct buffer.

How long is the drive from Kutaisi to Tbilisi?

220 km, about 3.5 hours on Georgia's only expressway. It's the basic one-way for travellers who flew into Kutaisi but fly out of Tbilisi. Drop-off surcharge in the capital runs $30–60. On the way is Gori with Stalin's house-museum and fortress — a good lunch stop.

Can I reach Svaneti from Kutaisi in a saloon?

Mestia — yes, the tarmac is good. Ushguli — no, 4x4 only. The drive from Kutaisi to Mestia takes around 5 hours up a mountain switchback road. In shoulder season and winter, the road occasionally closes due to landslides. For Svaneti, check pass conditions the day before you leave.

Can the car be delivered to my hotel instead of the airport?

Yes. Hotel delivery in Kutaisi is offered on the same basis as airport delivery — usually free of charge within the city. Some travellers land, take a taxi to their hotel and accept the car there the next morning — useful after a late flight. Timing is confirmed in advance.

Are winter tyres required for day trips from Kutaisi?

For the Imereti loop (Gelati, Sataplia, Tskaltubo, Okatse) usually not — heavy snow is rare in these lowlands. For Svaneti between 1 December and 1 March winter tyres are mandatory by law, and police turn vehicles back at the pass. Reputable suppliers fit them automatically on mountain-class cars in season.

Can I pick up in Kutaisi and drop off in Tbilisi?

Yes, it's one of the most common routes. One-way surcharge in Tbilisi is $30–60 depending on supplier. Return location is the Shota Rustaveli airport or a city office. Useful for travellers who flew in on Wizz, crossed Georgia west to east and fly out of the capital.

Where in Kutaisi can I eat proper jumbo cheese khinkali?

At Bar El Depo in the city centre. It rarely appears in guidebooks but locals know it well. The jumbo cheese khinkali here are fist-sized — a format unique to this place in Georgia. Our suppliers often mention it to guests as a small bonus to the rental. Parking nearby is usually free.

Is it difficult to drive in Kutaisi?

No, much easier than Tbilisi. Wider streets, less congestion, far fewer cameras. Local driving style is calmer than in the capital. The one spot demanding attention is the old bridges over the Rioni: narrow lanes that need careful passing with oncoming traffic.
