Car hire in Azerbaijan is easily the best way to see the country beyond Baku. For travellers from the UK, EU, USA, Canada, Australia and India, the ASAN e-Visa process is straightforward: a short online application, around $24, usually approved within three working days. From landing at Heydar Aliyev International Airport to heading out towards Gobustan or Gabala, the whole process rarely takes more than an hour.

Prices remain surprisingly reasonable for the region: economy cars start from $25–30 per day, crossovers from around $50, premium models from $80. On TakeCars, bookings are confirmed with a 15–20% online prepayment by card, while the remaining balance and security deposit are usually settled in cash at collection — standard practice among local rental partners.

Most guests pay the 15–20% online, then settle the rest and the deposit in cash — manat, euro or dollars. Deposits are returned immediately when the car comes back, with no waiting for bank transfers.

A common plan is to spend a couple of days exploring Baku on foot, then pick up a car and continue towards the Caspian coast or the mountains. Car hire in Baku is best arranged in advance, particularly between June and September, when demand for sedans and crossovers rises sharply.

In high season, the best cars are usually booked five to seven days before pickup. The same Hyundai Solaris can cost nearly half as much in November as it does in summer.

Where to drive from Baku

Most of Azerbaijan’s genuinely interesting places sit within 200–350 km of the capital, and without a car they are either difficult to reach or tied to organised tours. Gobustan, with its prehistoric rock carvings and mud volcanoes, lies 60 km south of Baku — easily manageable in half a day. Yanar Dag, the famous burning hillside, is only 25 km from the city centre. If you want the seaside, Sea Breeze and Dalga Beach are about an hour away via the new motorway.

Most of our guests rent a car for two to five days after staying in Baku — enough time for Gobustan, Gabala and the return through Sheki.

The more scenic routes begin further inland: Gabala with its cable cars and mountain lakes, the old Silk Road town of Sheki, Shahdag’s ski slopes and the green valleys around Quba. The southern Caspian coast near Lankaran and Astara can technically be reached by bus, though the journey quickly becomes more about timetables than travel.

Without a car, combining Sheki and Gabala in one trip becomes awkward. Regional buses are infrequent, and they do not really fit around mountain dinners or flexible stops along the way.

There is also a practical reason many visitors choose to drive: Baku’s weather. The city is famously windy, especially in autumn and winter, and even relatively short walks can feel exhausting in strong gusts. With a car, moving around the city becomes noticeably easier and far more comfortable.

Wat onze gebruikers zeggen

Payment, deposits and transparent conditions

TakeCars accepts the 15–20% prepayment by standard debit or credit card — Visa, Mastercard and Maestro all work normally. The remaining balance and security deposit are then paid in cash when collecting the car, usually in manat, euro or dollars. The process is simple, and the amount shown during booking is the final amount you pay.

Deposits with TakeCars local partners are usually between 200 and 300 AZN, roughly $120–180. That is considerably lower than most international rental chains, where $500–1,500 is commonly blocked on a credit card. Cash deposits are returned immediately at drop-off, provided there is no damage or unpaid fines.

Deposits with local partners are significantly lower than with the large international brands, and they are returned on the spot rather than released weeks later through the bank.

All pricing on TakeCars is displayed clearly before booking: daily rate, insurance, deposit amount and payment method are all visible in advance. No hidden extras, no surprise fees at the desk.

If the website says $35 per day, that is exactly what you pay. No unexpected desk fees and no compulsory insurance suddenly added at collection.

Free cancellation is available up to seven days before pickup — noticeably more generous than the standard 24–48 hour policies used by many international platforms.

Documents and rental conditions

Booking a car in Azerbaijan is straightforward: passport with entry stamp, valid driving licence and a payment card for the prepayment. UK, EU, US, Canadian and Australian licences are accepted directly. An International Driving Permit is only recommended for licences written in non-Latin script.

UK, EU and US licences are accepted without issues. An International Driving Permit is mainly useful for licences local partners may struggle to read.

Age and driving experience

Most rental partners require drivers to be at least 24 years old with a minimum of two years’ driving experience. Some economy cars are available from 21–22 with a young-driver surcharge, while premium models and larger crossovers are usually limited to drivers aged 25 and above.

Economy cars are often available from 22. Larger SUVs and mountain-route vehicles usually require drivers to be at least 25 with more experience for insurance purposes.

Second drivers should always be added

This is one of Azerbaijan’s less obvious local rules. If somebody not listed on the rental agreement is found driving the car, the vehicle may be impounded during a routine police check.

If you plan to share driving duties with a partner or friend, add the second driver at pickup. It is inexpensive — often free — and avoids unnecessary problems on the road.

Cross-border travel is generally restricted. The Armenian border remains closed, and insurance does not cover Iran. Some partners do allow trips into Georgia with prior approval and additional insurance.

Insurance: TPL, CDW and Super CDW

Third-party liability insurance is included by law with every rental in Azerbaijan. Standard CDW is also commonly included with TakeCars partners, meaning drivers usually pay only the excess in the event of damage — typically around 200–300 AZN.

Standard CDW is usually already included in the rate. The most common exclusions are wheels, tyres, glass and the underside of the vehicle.

Why Super CDW is often worth considering

Super CDW removes the excess entirely and usually adds protection for wheels, rims and glass — particularly useful on mountain roads towards Gabala, Sheki, Shahdag and Quba.

For mountain routes, Super CDW often makes sense. Wheels and rims are the first things damaged on rougher roads, even by experienced drivers.

What to do in case of damage

If anything happens to the car — even a minor scrape — the first step is always to contact the rental partner, then call the police on 102.

Without a police report, insurance does not apply. Even minor scratches can become fully chargeable without official paperwork.

The most expensive mistake is trying to ignore damage and continue driving. Call immediately — support operates 24/7 across the country.

Driving in Azerbaijan: what to expect

Speed limits are slightly lower than in much of Europe: 60 km/h in towns, 90 km/h on regular roads and 110 km/h on motorways. Cameras are widely used in Baku and along major routes, with fines reaching rental partners quickly.

Radar detectors are illegal. Most drivers rely on Waze instead, where locals actively report cameras and police patrols in real time.

Alcohol and navigation

Although a small legal alcohol limit exists, both locals and rental companies strongly advise against drinking at all before driving. Penalties are severe, and insurance becomes invalid once alcohol is involved.

For navigation, Waze remains the most reliable option. Outside Baku, Google Maps can be inconsistent, while Waze benefits from constant local updates.

Baku’s 60 km/h limit, assertive local driving, strong winds and Waze instead of Google Maps — those are the four things worth remembering from day one.

Parking and toll roads

Central Baku uses paid parking via a mobile app. International bank cards generally work without issues, while parking outside the centre is often free.

Avoid handing keys to hotel parking attendants. Local regulations can treat this as a violation, and the car may end up towed.

Several toll sections now exist on Azerbaijan’s motorway network, with the main northern route costing around $6. Collecting a rental car directly at GYD Airport is usually the easiest option.

De prijs van autoverhuur in Azerbeidzjan hangt af van het seizoen en de lengte van de huurperiode.
