Car hire in Larnaca is the easiest way to begin a trip around Cyprus. LCA airport is just 4–8 km from the city centre — one of the shortest airport-to-city distances anywhere in the Mediterranean. Ten minutes along the B4, and you are already on the Finikoudes seafront: no shuttle, no transfer, no wasted time.
Larnaca handles most incoming flights to Cyprus, and the island’s largest rental fleet is based here. There is more choice than in Paphos, and prices usually start lower too. In low season, economy cars are available from around 26 USD per day.
LCA works well because it usually takes only five to ten minutes from the terminal exit to the keys. We meet guests by flight number, hand the car over, and they are already heading to the hotel while the rest of the plane is still queueing for shuttles.
The same proximity makes Larnaca a practical base for short trips around the island: 40 minutes to Ayia Napa, 45 minutes to Nicosia, about an hour to Limassol and 35 minutes to Lefkara.

Picking up your car at LCA airport and in town
In LCA’s arrivals hall, just after passport control, you will find the international rental desks: Hertz, Avis, Sixt, Europcar and Enterprise. Most local Cyprus partners work differently. They use a meet-and-greet service: a representative meets you at the terminal exit, then takes you to a nearby office one or two kilometres away.
Late-night arrivals into Larnaca are normal for us. We have your flight number in advance and wait as long as needed — never the usual sorry, the office is closed, come back tomorrow.
International chains at LCA usually add an airport surcharge of around 10–20 USD on top of the base price. Local partners typically do not charge it, although collection takes slightly longer because the office is a short drive from the terminal. In practice, pick-up usually takes ten to fifteen minutes.
City offices can be a little cheaper than LCA, but many close between 18:00 and 20:00 and often do not work on Sundays. If your flight lands late or at the weekend, it is usually better to collect the car at the airport. The difference in price is small, and the convenience is worth it.
From LCA to the Finikoudes seafront is ten minutes on the B4 — probably the easiest first drive on the island. Wide road, few roundabouts, calm traffic. A good place to get used to driving on the left.
Day trips from Larnaca
Larnaca’s main advantage is simple: almost everything is close. Many of Cyprus’s best-known places fit comfortably into a day’s drive. Head east on the A3 and, in 40–50 minutes, you reach Ayia Napa with its beaches and lively evening scene. A little further on is Cape Greco, known for its sea caves and the natural arch of Kamara tou Koraka.
From Larnaca, you can easily do Cape Greco, lunch in Ayia Napa and a stop in Protaras in one day. On a trip like that, the car pays for itself very quickly.
North-west on the A2, Nicosia is about 45 minutes away. Park on the southern side, walk along Ledra Street, or cross the Green Line via Metehan and buy the required Turkish insurance at the checkpoint. Limassol is roughly an hour west on the A5, with its marina, old town and the Kourion ruins nearby.
Lefkara is about half an hour away via the A1 and B1. The village is famous for lefkaritika lace and handmade silver, making it an easy half-day trip with lunch in a local taverna.
Just five minutes from LCA are Larnaca Salt Lake and the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque. From November to March, pink flamingos settle on the lake, so it works beautifully as a first stop after landing or a final stop before the flight home. Troodos and Paphos, including the UNESCO archaeological park, are both about 1.5–2 hours west on the A5. Many guests arrive through LCA, travel across the island, and return the car at Paphos airport.
Parking in Larnaca
Central Larnaca is fairly simple. Blue lines mark paid parking zones during business hours — usually around 1–2 USD per hour, from 08:00 to 18:00, Monday to Saturday. On Sundays and public holidays, most parking is free, which makes Larnaca especially easy to enjoy by car at the weekend.
The most reliable car park near Finikoudes is the covered LOIS Finikoudes Multipark on Kosma Lysioti. It has around 200 spaces, works 24/7 and costs roughly 3 USD for six hours. The municipal car park at the end of Ermou is cheaper and often quieter in the evening.
Locals do not usually park right on Finikoudes on a Sunday. They leave the car in the surrounding streets and walk in. Free seafront parking is one of Larnaca’s small pleasures.
Double yellow lines mean no parking at any time — not even for a minute. Enforcement is strictest near Larnaca General Hospital and around the Church of Saint Lazarus in the old town. A single yellow line means no stopping during the times shown on the sign, usually 08:00–18:00.
The old town is not really somewhere to drive into. Some lanes are barely a metre and a half wide, and there is nowhere to turn around. Park on Athinon, on Finikoudes or in LOIS Multipark, then walk.

Automatic or manual?
Drivers used to right-hand traffic often choose an automatic in Cyprus. It removes the extra task of changing gears with the left hand and lets you focus on lanes, mirrors and roundabouts. The automatic premium is usually around 6–15 USD per day, and these cars are booked first in high season. For July and August, reserve one to two months ahead.
If you have already driven on the left in the UK, Ireland or Australia, a manual is perfectly manageable. If this is your first time driving on the left, an automatic saves a day or two of adjustment, especially at roundabouts.
A gentle first route
LCA to the Finikoudes seafront takes about ten minutes on the B4. The road is wide, there are few roundabouts, and traffic is calm. It is the most practical first-drive stretch on the island: after half an hour, most drivers feel comfortable with the wheel on the right, the mirrors to the left and the indicators now under the left hand.
Do not rush the first hour. If something goes wrong — wrong lane, wrong exit from a roundabout — find the next car park, stop and breathe. Local drivers see the red plates and usually give you space.
