Car hire in Armenia lets you experience the country in a completely different way — far beyond what any tour bus can offer. Think cliffside monasteries, the shimmering expanse of Lake Sevan, the scenic mountain passes near Dilijan, and the bustling markets of Gyumri. For first-time drivers in the Caucasus, Armenia feels surprisingly welcoming: the distances are short, and life moves at a calmer pace once you leave the capital.

Holders of British, EU, US, Canadian, Australian and more than sixty other passports enjoy visa-free entry for up to 180 days a year. An International Driving Permit isn’t required — any valid modern licence printed in Latin script is accepted straight away. What’s more, prices here are noticeably gentler than in neighbouring Georgia or anywhere in the EU.

"In our experience, Armenia is one of the most relaxed countries in the region for a first-time renter. A passport and a national driving licence are usually all we need at the handover."

"We try to meet our guests by flight number right at the airport. It’s faster and calmer than waiting for a rental shuttle in the queue after landing."

TakeCars partners with around a hundred carefully checked vehicles across Armenia — from compact Ford Fiestas and Hyundai Elantras to rugged Toyota Land Cruiser Prados and the classic Lada Niva 4×4. Every car comes with genuine photos and honest reviews from previous renters, so you always know exactly who you’re dealing with and what you’re getting.

"There are no faceless fleets here — every car has a real person behind it, and you can read their reviews and see their photos before you book."

How much does car hire in Armenia cost, and when is it cheapest?

Car hire in Armenia is noticeably more affordable than in Georgia or the EU, and the selection is wider than many people expect. Economy cars start from around $30 per day, comfortable saloons like the Hyundai Elantra or Kia Rio range from $35 to $55, while crossovers sit between $50 and $100. The Lada Niva occupies its own special category at $30–45 a day and is popular enough that it’s wise to book early.

"We recommend booking at least three weeks ahead, especially for the summer peak and for the Lada Niva — by July, the open slots disappear faster than you might think."

The low season from November to March brings prices 30–40% lower than summer rates. June and September often offer the best mix of pleasant weather and reasonable cost. July and August are the busiest and most expensive months, as the Armenian diaspora and peak tourist numbers arrive. All prices on the site are shown in US dollars, with payment accepted in dollars, euros or drams at the current rate.

"The same crossover in early June and early August can differ by half — that's normal seasonality in Armenia."

You can collect your car at Zvartnots Airport right at arrivals, or have it delivered to your hotel in Yerevan — most partners offer free delivery within the city. Airport pickup adds a modest $3–8 per day for the airport fee, but if you’re heading straight out to Dilijan or Lake Sevan, it more than pays for itself by saving you a transfer.

"If your first night is in Yerevan, it’s often easier to pick up the car the next morning in the city. But if you’re planning to hit the road immediately, collecting it at the airport saves both time and money."

Documents, licence and driver age

Armenia stands out as one of the most straightforward countries in the region when it comes to paperwork. Citizens of the UK, EU, US, Canada, Australia and many other countries can enter visa-free for up to 180 days per year. In most cases, all you need is a passport valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure.

"Most of our guests are surprised at how light the paperwork is here. A passport and a driving licence — and we have you on the road in fifteen minutes."

You don’t need an International Driving Permit in Armenia. As a signatory to the Vienna Convention, the country accepts any modern driving licence printed in Latin script — including UK, EU, US, Canadian and Australian ones. If your licence uses a non-Latin alphabet, you’ll need to bring an IDP or a notarised translation.

"A passport plus your home licence in Latin script is almost always enough. There's no extra notarised paperwork in most cases."

The minimum age is usually 21 with at least one to two years of driving experience, depending on the partner. A few suppliers will rent to 19-year-olds, though choice is more limited and it pays to book ahead. Drivers under 25 may incur a young-driver fee of $5–10 per day on selected cars — this is always shown transparently during booking.

"19+ is possible, but selective. If you're 19 or 20, send us a message in advance — we'll put together the cars currently available for your age."

Nissan Qashqai in Armenië

Lada Niva in Armenië

Mazda 6 in Armenië

Hartelijk dank!

Insurance, deposit and payment

Third-party liability insurance is required by law in Armenia and is always included. Most of our partners also provide basic Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) with an excess. However, items like glass, rims, tyres and the underbody are often not covered — which is why Full Coverage makes good sense for mountain roads and trips to remote monasteries.

"Full Coverage at $8–15 a day removes the excess and adds glass, rims and roadside help. On the very first trip into the mountains, it almost always pays for itself."

"If Tatev, Sevan or Syunik are on your itinerary, take Super CDW without thinking twice. A pebble flicked up by an oncoming car covers the price of the policy in seconds."

Deposits with local partners are reasonable — typically $100–300 in cash, handed back on the spot when you return the car in good condition. Quite a few vehicles, from the Ford Fiesta to the Mustang Cabrio, are available with no deposit at all. The exact deposit terms are always clearly displayed on each car’s page.

"Cash deposits aren't blocked on a card — we hand them back face to face the moment you return the car clean and undamaged."

Payment is refreshingly simple: dollars, euros and Armenian drams are all accepted in cash for both the rental and any deposit. Visa and Mastercard can be used for the online portion (usually 15–20%), with the balance settled at handover.

"Armenia is one of the easiest countries in the region for payments — cards online for the booking, then dollars, euros or drams in cash at handover."

Roads, traffic rules and parking in Armenia

Armenia has no toll roads or vignettes. The only road fee applies to those entering the country in their own foreign-plated vehicle — rental cars are exempt. Most partners offer unlimited mileage as standard.

"Armenia is one of the few countries where neither vignettes nor road tolls apply. The only thing you'll pay for on the move is petrol."

Speed limits are straightforward: 60 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h outside towns, and 110 km/h on motorways. Cameras are common around Yerevan and on the main routes to Sevan and Gyumri, with little tolerance for speeding. Drink-driving is treated very seriously — Armenia has a zero-tolerance policy.

"Speed cameras in Yerevan are precise and unforgiving. Google Maps or Waze is the easiest way to keep an eye on cameras and current limits as you drive."

Winter tyres are mandatory

Winter tyres must be fitted by law between 1 December and 1 March. Our partners handle this automatically at no extra charge. In mountainous regions such as Dilijan, Tsaghkadzor, Sevan and Syunik, snow chains can be useful during winter — it’s worth confirming availability when booking.

Parking and petrol

In central Yerevan, paid parking (marked by red lines) costs around 100 drams per hour or 500 drams per day. It’s free from 22:00 to 10:00. Outside the capital, parking is almost always free — whether at monasteries, in Gyumri or Dilijan. For fuel, stick to the major brands: Shell, Gulf, CPS, Grand Petroleum and Max for consistent quality.

"Treat petrol stations in Armenia like you treat hotels — pick a known brand. The big networks deliver consistent quality; rural pumps can surprise you."

Driving routes around Armenia

Armenia is compact enough that a week on the road can comfortably cover monasteries, mountain lakes, the dramatic canyons of Syunik and the wine country around Areni. Most attractions are reachable on good tarmac roads, so your choice of car depends more on your planned route than on off-road capability.

Saloon or crossover

The popular 3–5 day circular route takes in Garni, the cave monastery of Geghard, the Symphony of Stones, Lake Sevan, Dilijan and Khor Virap with its unforgettable views of Mount Ararat. All of this is perfectly comfortable in a saloon such as the Hyundai Elantra or Kia Rio.

"For Yerevan – Garni – Geghard – Sevan – Dilijan, you don't need a crossover — the roads are paved and the elevation changes are gentle."

When you want a Lada Niva or proper 4×4

For more challenging routes like Tatev, Noravank, the switchbacks of Syunik, the Geghama Mountains or Aragats, a Lada Niva 4×4 or a capable SUV is the better choice. The Niva remains a local favourite — simple, reliable and perfectly suited to dirt tracks at $30–45 per day.

"Travellers consistently choose the Lada Niva for Syunik and the Geghama Mountains — it works better there than a crossover three times the price."

Cities and one-way to Tbilisi

We maintain separate fleets in the two main cities: Car hire in Yerevan — the bustling capital and main gateway — and Rent a car in Gyumri, the northern cultural centre. The only international border rental cars can cross from Armenia is into Georgia. Selected partners can arrange the necessary notarised permit (around $150), with the route agreed beforehand. One-way rentals from Yerevan to Tbilisi are also possible.

"If you're planning the Armenia–Georgia loop, we'll arrange the permit and pick a car that crosses the border without questions."

De prijs van autoverhuur in Armenië hangt af van het seizoen en de lengte van de huurperiode.
